I would use zinnser primer, then zinnser all coat - the allcoat is a water based paint which does NOT go yellow!

Hi jo myself would strip it right back to bare wood. has varnish and paint don,t mix very well then give it good sanding so you get good key for painting. and iwould use undercoat then white eggshell on my fireplace has it bit tougher than gloss put only down fall is it yellows. after while
