You can nail a plaster board over the bricks if you can't render . The real reason I'm responding to this is because , if you don't install an air vent in the closed fire place you will experience interstitial condensation in the chimney and serious damp issues in the future .
HI Jeffery best to use plastering sand & cement to render over bricks then multifinish plaster skim coat it would probably be best to use thermilite blocks to brick up can be cut with an old saw if need to hope this helps you cheers Danny
Instead of bricking up the fireplace you could build a wooden frame and screw plasterboard into it. This could then be plastered to blend in with rest of wall. Make sure when building frame you have somewhere to screw into when hanging fire. Stuart Aitken Get it plastered ltd
