Contract and deposit

Posted by Hao Li, on
This trade person registered on your website has visited me and gave me a quote. I accepted the quote but he wants 40% deposit without a contract, is that normal?

Thank you for your question. In 35 years I've never had a deposit on any job. Always sign a contract or at worst case get the builder to send you an email detailing the works to be done. I believe that you should do 30% /40% of the works and then get some draw down. Summmery. Be careful when you are being asked this kind of question. Regards Michael.

Hi Hao I wouldn't consider giving anyone 40% or even 33% deposit upfront without any materials or a blow being struck on site, contract or no contract! Ed

It depends on the agreement. I state in my quotations that If you accept the quotation that 33% is payable up front to cover some of the material costs! It comes down to your judgement. The other option is to draw up a contract and have them sign it. Which i would personally be happy to sign and if they are legit they would be too!!
