Hi Liz If it's a sealed system i.e. A combi if could be the expansion vessel diaphanous is split The boiler is ten years old I think it's time to change
If the system is a sealed system, with a combi boiler, then as stated in other posts it could well be the diaphragm in the expansion vessel. A quick check to verify this is to see if when the boiler is running can you see water escaping from the pressure relief pipe? (Usually terminates against the wall outside.) If not then you may have a leak on pipework somewhere on the system and as you have not noticed any wet patches in your house it most likely will be under your floor downstairs. Combi life expectancy isnt much more than 10 years so if it is a part that is needed i wouldnt spend good money on a boiler that old. Instead put it toward the cost of a new one.
it also depends on the make of boiler if its a low cost boiler then change it if its one of the premium brands it could be worth repairing always a difficult decision most will say change it because if you repair and something else goes wrong in a short time most customers will blame the engineer
I would advise getting your boiler serviced to remedy the situation then take it from there!
