Intermittent roof leak

Posted by Tony Clarke, on
I've lived in my current home for 2 years. A few weeks ago I got a damp spot on my bedroom ceiling about 30 cm from the outside corner. It has rained heavily since then and no sign of a leak. A few days ago I got another damp spot. Both times there was heavy wind on that corner. There is no sign of damage to the roof. The tiles have clearly not shifted. A friend suggested it might be something as simple as moss in the gutter causing rainwater to pool in the gutters and then the wind driving it under the eaves. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Hi Tony It could be swirling wind driving the rain under the tiles and perhaps there's a hole in the felt underneath allowing water in

Hi Tony, It is possible the ridge tiles on the corner of the roof may need re-pointing / re-bedding, tiles may have cracked (but not slipped). The direction of the wind / rain obviously determines the severity of the water ingress. Although, the under felt (sarking felt / breathable membrane etc), should be an adequate 2nd defence - do you have this? Regardless, water is somehow getting driven in to the roof & dripping / soaking into the plasterboard ceiling, (& insulation?). This results in a stain on the ceiling! It is unlikely that water is being driven from the gutter. Please post a job on the main site - 3 reputable / local roofers will provide a free diagnosis & quote!
