Ridge tiles

Posted by Lyn Bradshaw, on
My son had new tiled roof fitted less than 2 months ago. He returned from work tonight to find every ridge tile blown off in the wind. I know it has been windy today in Notts but having retrieved one of the tiles it only seems to have 2 blobs of cement on to secure it to the tiles. Surely the ridge tiles should secured onto roof with a bed of cement? Is this poor workmanship? Can anyone advise please

Hello Lyn, I'm sorry to say that it's seem to be bad workmanship in not giving a full bed to the ridge tiles, once a ridge tile has been pushed into the new cement it would take some shifting. when we do ridge work we always relay the ridge tile (we never point them up) this method will never last long, you should also seek a least a 5 year guarantee when complete. Make sure you see adequate insurance when asking for roofing work to be done to your home. Regards Michael

Hi Lyn You should ask a recommend roofer from Rated People to inspect the workmanship .If it is sub standard you should provide a report to the original roofer to put the work right asap . Or you may choose to ask the recommend roofer to carry out the work and give the new invoice to the original roofer. It does sound like sub standard workmanship . Did you get a written guarantee ? Did they have the correct insurance?Did you check references? Maybe as a sign of goodwill they will install a dry ridge system (more expensive) to compensate you. hi ive had approximatly 20 enquiries off potential customers all with ridge tiles so the wind has been a major problem obviously in my opinion there is 3 options for everyone 1,only have the damaged area repaired yes its the cheapest option with xmas coming up but the chances are if a fews come off the chances of the rest in poor condition are high so if your doing it you may as well do all the ridges last thing u want is a strong gust next week for example and the rest come off in a different area 2,as said above to remove all ridges and reset/rebed them using a 3/1 mix adding a frostproofer additive due to cold weather BUT in my opinion this is a bad time of year for cementing the last thing u want is the frost getting to it because instead of lasting 10+ chances are theyll need doing next year.(false economy) 3,there is a product on the market called DRY RIDGE which is a mechanically fixed system that requires no mortar and in my opinion would last quite easily in these conditions, yes it will cost more but once done will never need doing again contact me if you would like any futher help regards scott weathertech

Hi Lyn. definately poor workmanship, all ridges should be bedded on a continuous bed of cement. I would suggest that you get an independent inspection of the ridges and the rest of the work carried out. then present the report to the roofer and give him in writing 14 days to correct the problem. if he refuses threaten him with trading standards. good luck.
