Old felt exterior has been fixed, painted on fiberglass?

Posted by Rachael King, on
Hello, we have just paid to have a roofer to fix our very old and leaking kitchen roof which was a flat felt roof. They said they would do a fiberglass roof which would be watertight and last a number of years. When looking at the work they seem to have just painted some type of silver paint type product on top of it all. I am very naïve with matters like this but does this seem right? Money is tight, and our priority was to make it watertight, but it seems like a lot of money for something my husband could have just painted on - there may be much more to it than that! Thanks!

Hi Rachael, Agree whole heartedly with Joseph. All I would add is that the joists need inspecting whilst the old roof is off.

Hi Rachel. If they have just painted on top of the felt roof this is not correct, they should have eather removed the boarding or overlaid with tong and grooved osb board to falls this would include at least two coats of clear resin with taped joint's and then a resin colored finish coat. Cheers. Joe Whelan North West Building Services.

hi rachael yes sounds like reflective paint as being painted on this will not solve the leaking roof problem,im sorry to say but you have being conned,

Hi Rachael, again sorry to hear what happened, I agree with the last person it sounds like reflective silver paint. Its the old saying I'm afraid, If its to good to be true, it normally is. You should really get three prices and that way you will get three opinions,(nearly all estimates & advice are free) I'm afraid flat roofs don't patch up to well and the cheapest way to solve the problem is to renew them. Good luck

Hi Rachel I think your concerns are correct. This does not sound like they have installed a fibre glass roof. It sounds like they have just painted the felt with either an acrypol or a reflective paint . If you can email me some pics i will give you an exact diagnosis. You should always get at least 2-3 quotations when needing repairs and check prior references . I think you may have been a victim of a dodger roofer . Always check the finished work and make sure you are completely satisfied before paying your invoice as it may be difficult to contact them again . Kind regards Jason
