Leaking Chimney

There is damp at the edge of loft where the external chimney breast meets the roof. This has begun to make its way into the bedroom.The chimney has been capped and the flashing looks (from the ground) to be in good condition, but some of the pointing looks in poor state. Is poor pointing likely to cause incursion of water?
