How can i extended my purlin

Posted by Jay Big, on
I want to remove my chimney breast and my purlin in sitting on the chimney breast. How can i extend the purlin so it sits on the external wal. Can i add another purlin and over lap it by 1 meter and use bolts to fasten them togather.

Hi Jay I doubt if a 1 metre section overlap would be sufficient , if the existing purlin is supported centrally(internal wall) along its length it would be fine to put another purlin from the chimney side to the central support (internal wall). Allow an overlap and bolt them together, the new purlin would sit slightly higher to ensure it sits tight against the rafters. The hardest bit would be getting the new purlin into the loft. If you are unsure it's probably best to post your job on the site. Hope this helps.Ed

Hello Jay, Yes you can overlap and bolt BUT it must be structurally inspected or indeed advice by one to be given. Don't get doing alterations without paper work to back it up. Regards Michael
