It will depend on the point of entry of the water that is. If the damp patch is on the ceiling and not near any of the walls, then this will indicate that the leak is from the roof. On the other hand if the damp patch is near the wall, the leak may be coming from the guttering, fascia or even the stone/brick wall itself. Have a free photographic survey done by a reputable company and the survey will establish the cause of the leak.
