Re-pointing? Will it work?

Water penetrating bedroom ceiling where chimney is. Had leading and its capped but not had it re-pointed. Do you think re-pointing will work? Its only ever been slight damp patch until all this rain and its got worse. Help!?

Hi Helen, firstly if the chimney has been capped it should have been vented at the cap and in the rooms with the flu`s in to allow air flow, this will help to keep it dry. this should be established before anything else. I will be unable to comment on the pointing without seeing the job, if you have binoculars use them to have a look at the chimney yourself to see its condition. Kind regards Ian Handyman express
