Overstressed roof with failure to timbers

Posted by Jack Evans, on
Just had a survey carried out on a property we're buying (3 bed victorian mid terraced in South London). The surveyor has said that "the roof is overstressed with some failure to the timbers and additional stregthening is required to prevent further splitting of timbers and risk of movement of the roof frame. This has resulted in distortion to the first floor door frames" How much of a major issue is this? Is it substantial enough to necessitate renegotiating with the vendors? Would we require a roofer or structural engineer? Thanks

Yes its a problem and needs looking at seriously, without a report telling you exactlly what needs fixing you no idea of costs it could just need some extra fixings adding or may need some serious steel work and propping to fix it costs could. Be very high. Approach with caution
