Really old roof, replace or repair ?

Posted by Andrew Entwistle, on
Hi. We have an old hall in North Yorkshire which has a very old stone/slate roof with a ridge beam construction but which is in need of a lot of repair. The tiles are around 1" thick and look more like pavias than tiles, lots of holes which have been patchen with mortar and there appears to be a lot of bowing and sinking where it has settled or broken the supporting timbers. I have got my head around the tiles will need to come off in order to re seat them, but would we be able to remove and re-set the existing tiles/slates on a modern timber roof ? The existing roof looks great, but is clearly on it's last legs, but my concern is replicating the strength needed to support these uge tiles, and also, finding equivalent slates whic may match. What sort of time frame ? How many people shoudl I expect to be working on it ?Would I need a specialist restoration company or is this something which a general roofing contractor could handle ?

Hi Andrew, It sounds like you have a yorkshire stone slated roof. The weight of these causing old roof beams to sag is very common. You want a roofing company that specialises in this type of work. Doubtless the company that you get to do the work will want to view inside and out so as to ascertain the condition of the timbers and what restrictions there may be if it is a listed building before any recommendation could be made. This is what I specialise in and could deffinatly help you. Our details are on the internet at Max Roofings website (w. maxroofing. co. uk). we are based in the west yorkshire area and cover Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Burnley, Blackburn and all surrounding areas. We can also travel further if required. If you think we can help then please feel free to look us up and give me a call. Jesse.
