Roof Spread

Posted by D Wilson, on
Is the roofer responsible for rectifying the problem on the roof he has just replaced? Roof is spreading within 1 month of being renewed. Tiles are falling off the roof. After discussions with him he says he is not responsible but is prepared to help me out. Is this correct? Roof had not spread for 80 years until the roof was renewed. Surely this is a common issue and should be expected and addressed at the time the roof is being renewed. I am not blaming him or faulting his workmanship. Just would like to know if this issue is covered by the guarantee he signed. He says he had been told by other roofers that he should walk away as it is not his problem. I just want some impartial advice before I talk again with him

Did the roofer do any structural work or simply replace tiles, battens and felt, if he did any structural work then he may bare some responsibility. However if you have simply had him replace the roof covering then not sure he has any blame to carry, did you use a building inspector ensure building regulations were adhered to and also that the roof structure could 1. Could cope with being messed about with without and extra timber and 2. Could cope with a heavier load from New tiles (new tiles tend to be heavier than old ones. Either way tiles shouldn't fallng off even with some small spreading, obviously you you got a photocopy of the roofers public liability insurance certificate as well as its such a crucial part of a house
