Ceiling Joist Cut

Posted by Angela Henser, on
Hi, we have just noticed that a ceiling joist in our roof has been cut. We had not noticed this previously due to insulation and this was not picked up in survey when we bought property. Is this a problem and do we need to reinstate or reinforce this now? If so, do we need a builder or joiner/carpenter for this? Many thanks

Hi Angela the main purpose of the ceiling joist is to tie the rafters together and prevent the roof spreading so it would be a good idea to repair it by fixing a new section on the side of the existing joist , allow a good lap on each side of the cut and secure with screws. It's a job you could do yourself or get a carpenter in. Ed
