There are several types chimney capping devises, from strap secured metal covers to half round cowl's, however in my opinion the "Elephants feet are by far the best option. It is a terracotta clay cap which fits in the mouth of the pot and is ventilated with small holes all the way around. No need for strapping, simply fits into the mouth of the pot. This type of cap cannot be used for open fires, wood burners or gas ventilation. Most roofers will supply what ever type of capping you require, hope this has been of some help.

Most Roofers would supply and fit the cowls (unless told otherwise by the customer) cost of a bird cowl can range from £ 10 for a mesh one that drops into the chimney pot to £ 55 for one that has a steel strap that is screw fixed round the chimney pot. Then add on labour, most roofers would charge a fix rate (depending on access and height of the chimney) from £ 80 to £ 150 and if its a company it would be a bit more depending on there profit margins. Theses prices will very depending on what part of the country you live in.
