What is the recommended method to remove moss growth from a roof? Power washing or cleaning with chemicals?

Hello Anne, the recommended (by me) method is to scrape every tile clean from the top down and finally the gutter/downpipes etc. Not the most favourable job in the roofing world but needs to be done sometimes. Treat with an anti fungal solution which deters any future growth, unfortunately the rate of growth depends on where you live! I would never pressure wash tiles as depending on the make they can be extremely brittle, usually the older the weaker. Good luck Scott McLean roofing and building ltd

Good evening Anne, For moss growth in a roof I would recommend scraping it off and giving it a good brush then cleaning the gutters after to make sure they are all clear to avoid future blockage. I wouldn't recommend pressure washing a pitched roof ever as this can cause capillary action and you could end up with water inside your property causing damp issues. Hope this helps. Hi Anne. I advise to be careful if power washing as this can damage any underfelt if not cleaned from the top of the roof down and also disturb any loose hip/ridge tiles and mortar. Hand cleaning the roof is better depending on access to the roof and the amount of moss. Also do a test on a small section to ensure the roof tiles are not damaged by heavy moss coverage to the extent that the roof tiles would need replacing. Small concrete roof tiles(plain tiles)can over many years have many small holes in them that go all the way through the roof tile. This is unlikely but get at least three quotes. Thanks Brian BCD Roofing
