Reusing old slares

Posted by Angus Macleod, on
I know that it is fairly common to use reclaimed natural slate to slate a roof. My question is can man made fibre cement slate like e.g cembrit Jutland be reused? I have a roof that leaks and I want to replace the old roofing felt with new breathable membrane. Do I have to replace all the existing slates or can I reuse them?

Hi Angus, you need to establish the reason for the roof leaking in the first place, the old bitumen roofing felt may well have perished due to an inherent leak. with regards to re-using fibre cement slates, from my experience, when you remove them, the rivets can be removed quite easily, however, the nails are quite difficult to remove, and more often than not, the slates break under the pressure of trying to remove the nails. You may salvage some, but it will be a low percentage. Many thanks. Andrew.
