Washing machine banging on spin cycle

I have a Hoover Visiontech VT 816 D22 (8kg load, 1600 spin). It has started to bang very noisily when spinning. Strangely, it spins perfectly when run with no load.
I have checked the drum springs and the counterweights are secure. I have replaced the shock aborbers. I suspect the machine is not balancing the load before spin but allowing the spin to go ahead anyway (which it obviously should not do). Any ideas why that would happen - or what else might be causing the problem? Thanks in advance, Tim
