Pete Constable's question

I need to find a roofing contractor, but I am unsure about what 'type of job' because some of the work is related to brick work on one chimney stack and some work is related to leaks on 2 other stacks which are probably due to flashing/soakers. Can you please advise. Thank you. Pete

Hi Pete, your work is related to working at height, and this is mainly Roofing Contractors territory, Most Roofing contractors will be able to identify and cure the leak, which incidentally might be due to the poor brickwork or the mortar or pointing of the chimney, or even failing lead flashings. I would advise you to post the work under the Roofer heading. Good luck. Andrew.
Angus Macleod's question
Fri 13 Apr 2018 02:40am
I know that it is fairly common to use reclaimed natural slate to slate a roof. My question is can man made fibre cement slate like e.g cembrit Jutland be reused? I have a roof that leaks and I want to replace the old roofing felt with new breathable membrane. Do I have to replace all the existing slates or can I reuse them?

Hi Angus, you need to establish the reason for the roof leaking in the first place, the old bitumen roofing felt may well have perished due to an inherent leak. with regards to re-using fibre cement slates, from my experience, when you remove them, the rivets can be removed quite easily, however, the nails are quite difficult to remove, and more often than not, the slates break under the pressure of trying to remove the nails. You may salvage some, but it will be a low percentage. Many thanks. Andrew.
