The average cost of a new kitchen in 2023 is between £5,000 and £12,000. 

On average, homeowners pay between £5,000 and £12,000 for a new kitchen, which takes roughly 2 weeks to fit. 

Each kitchen renovation project has its own cost parameter, based on your choice of materials, the size of your kitchen, where you live in the UK, and how many things you want to buy and have installed.

For example, you might pay around £6,900 for a new 10m² kitchen which includes:

• Strip out of existing kitchen and appliances

A new kitchen worktop will cost you between £300 and £2,500 to buy and install, depending on what material you want your worktop to be made out of. Laminate worktops will cost you the least, whereas marble, glass, and copper are the most expensive worktops to buy and install.

Do you need upstands in a kitchen?

Upstands are extensions that you can get on top of your worktop, and that rise up the wall behind worksurfaces. They prevent liquids from running down the back of your cabinets by sealing off the gap between your wall and your worktop.

They’re also quite useful because they’re easier to clean than your walls, and act as a protective layer that catches splashes and stains well. Unlike splashbacks, which usually cover more of your wall, upstands tend to be under 200mm long.

Instead of replacing your cabinets entirely, you might want to consider leaving them and only changing the doors instead. This is cheaper and requires less work than removing and installing new ones.

If you are thinking of getting underfloor heating, doing it during your kitchen renovation is a good idea as it needs to be installed first, before you can lay down everything else.

As well as the cost of buying and installing lights, heating, units, and worktops, there are some additional costs that you might want to factor in. They might not all apply to your renovation, but it’s worth checking so that you can have a clear sense of your budget.

How much does it cost to remove a kitchen?

Before your new kitchen can be installed, your old one has to be removed and disposed of. The fee for this is typically between £550 – £650 to fully strip your existing kitchen and hire one 6 yard skip.

Sometimes, this service is included in the package when you hire builders to renovate your kitchen – it’s worth checking upfront.

Alternatively, if you want to avoid creating waste, and save yourself a bit of money, you could try and sell your old units online. If they’re in decent condition, you could get quite a bit of money back.

You may also want to hire a post construction cleaning specialist, to professionally clean your kitchen after the building works.

Do I need planning permission to install a new kitchen?

Unless your property is a listed building, in general, you will not be required to get planning permission for a new kitchen installation (if it’s in place of your old one). In this case, there will be no additional fees.

If, however, you are installing a new kitchen as part of a house extension, then it is very likely that you will need permission.

According to Planning Portal, the service that deals with all online planning applications, the cost to apply for planning permission is £206 plus £32.20 service charge (VAT). This totals to £238.20.
