Asbestos Garage Roof

Posted by Karon lllll, on
In the process of buying a house. Survey says garage roof is made of asbestos. It is over 50 years old. I am concerned about it deteriorating and asbestos fibres being released. I will be putting my freezer and dryer in there. So am worried. I would appreciate your advice please.

Hi, if you phone the HSE hotline they should be able to help you determine what sort of asbestos is involved. If you are still unsure find an asbestos surveying co( on rated people) who will test your asbestos and give you options (and peace of mind)

Its fairly typical of the 60s & 70s and pretty harmless if left alone and unless its leaking I wouldnt touch it. if you want to brush cobwebs away then wear a mask keep the door open . If on the other hand you're wanting to modernise the garage/utility room and make it more weather proof then have flat roof put on. Best regards Nick Avbase

As it is , it's harmless. Only if you should cut it or drill it can it atomise . If you're very worried , paint the inside surface , that will contain it and stop you worrying .
