What is the difference between an EICR and a PAT test?
While both ensure electrical safety, they target completely distinct elements of your property and fall under different legal guidelines:
- Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR): This is an in-depth survey of the fixed electrical infrastructure built directly into the property. It tests the consumer unit, internal wiring, light fittings, and main plug sockets hidden inside walls. It is a legal requirement for UK landlords every 5 years.
- Portable appliance testing (PAT): This focuses purely on electrical items that can be plugged in and moved around. It tests appliances like kettles, laptops, microwaves, and extension leads. Very quick response to my initial post although identifying the probable source of the leak took some time. After I accepted their quotation for remediation there was quite a wait for the bathroom team to become available.
