I probably would not use again as they fitted a small part in my flush that costs £7 in Screwfix. The fitting was done in 4 minutes. and they charged me £78 incl. vat. Also, after the first visit to assess the work needed, , I heard nothing for a week, i had to phone to ask, but didn’t seem to know what was going on. They sent a second plumber to me to look again, the first plumber, who disappeared for a week, then came back the next day to fix the part. ????

Solar panel installation specialists - what you need to know

The last decade has seen the number of homes with solar panels rocket, making them a common feature across our urban landscapes. In fact, over half a million homes in Britain now have them, and it’s easy to see why. Solar panels generate energy for your home, allowing you to do your bit for the environment, save on your electricity bills, and even make some money in the long run.

While this sounds like a no-brainer, you’ll need to do the sums to see exactly how your investment will pay back over the years. An expert energy installer will tell you what type of solar panels meet your needs and install the right system for your home, allowing you to start reaping the rewards from solar energy.

Cost of solar panel installation work

The cost of solar panels themselves has fallen in recent years due to cheaper manufacturing and higher competition within the solar tech market. So there’s never been a better time to invest.

That’s not to say this isn’t a considered decision, though. The installation of solar panels is still going to set you back several thousands of pounds, and the final figure will depend on the size of the system, as well as the quality and brand of the panels you choose.

The number of occupants in your home will be the main steer for the system and kWh required, but you should also consider other factors, such as the size of your roof and whether it’s south-facing.

Typically, you can expect to pay the following:

  • 14 m2, 2kWh: £3,000-£4,000
  • 21 m2, 3kWh: £4,000-£6,000
  • 28 m2, 4kWh: £6,000-£8,000

What types of solar panels are there?

There are a few different options available for solar panels. The most common is the monocrystalline or polycrystalline system. A familiar sight on many roofs, these are the blue or black photovoltaic solar panels, with a layer of glass covering them, and they’re usually mounted on an aluminium frame. They’re also the most efficient solar panel system for domestic use.

Despite their popularity, some still consider these solar panels a little ungainly. For those concerned about appearance, thin-film solar panels can be a more attractive option. These have a sleek finish and can be fitted directly onto many surfaces. Or, you can opt for solar tiles, which actually replace an area of existing roof (matched its style). While these options might be prettier, they’re more expensive and less efficient.

Out of all the options available, many people opt for traditional photovoltaic solar panels because they boast the biggest financial and environmental benefits. These perks include:

  • Electricity savings. Generating your own solar energy means reduced electricity bills. The level of this saving depends on the size of your system, volume of electricity use, and when you’ll be using it. If you can use electricity during the day when the panels are most efficient, you’ll save more (as less is needed from the grid).
  • Feed-in tariff. This is a payment from the Government for all of the energy you generate. This tariff is income tax-free and paid quarterly by energy suppliers. It’s guaranteed for 20 years and is index-linked, therefore rising with inflation. The rate varies depending on the size of your system.
  • Export tariff. You’re paid for any energy that you don’t use, which is sent back to the grid. The rate is set at 5.03p/kWh.

How do solar panels work?

All three options fall into the same category, and that’s photovoltaic solar, or PV. This means they produce energy from sunlight, which is then used to power lighting and household appliances.

There’s also another type of solar panel which serves a slightly different purpose. Solar thermal panels use the sun’s light to heat water for your house, allowing you to cut down on heating bills. However, this type doesn’t produce electricity, which is where the Governmental incentives are focused.

The qualifications your tradesperson needs

Both the installer and the system will need to meet the standards of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Your installer should provide a MCS certificate upon completion of the work. You can then use this to apply for the Government’s schemes with a licensed energy supplier.

Planning permission for solar panel installation jobs

Generally, you don’t need planning permission to install solar PV systems. However, there are a few exceptions, such as properties in conservation areas, those that are listed, and for homes with flat roofs. You may need to get approval from the council, so check with your local authority.

Insurance your tradesperson needs

A reputable energy installer should have public liability insurance to protect against any accidental damage. Many will also opt for professional indemnity insurance to cover any guidance on design and financial advice regarding renewable energy.

Questions you should ask your tradesperson

  • Are they MCS accredited?
  • What brand of solar panels do they recommend?
  • Will the system have a warranty?
