Kevin arrived promptly at the time we agreed. I simply cannot fault him at all, he was extremely polite, friendly and very meticulous towards his work. I would not hesitate to use him again and would gladly highly recommend him to any friends that needed any work undertaking. I am extremely happy with the quality of the finished work . Thankyou Kevin.... you were a joy to meet and many thanks for all the work you carried out.. Definitely a 5 star rating from me.

I had a professional experience from the first point of contact to the finish of the job. Jay & Jordan are both very knowledgeable, easy to talk to and stick to the agreement. It was a straight forward job, and that's exactly how they handled it. No complications. Handed over a clean and tidy site. Have asked them to quote for another job. I have advised them to bring up their online presence to give potential customers more information about the company.
Jackie
Russell and Tom are very reliable people who can offer high quality for renovation, tiling, plastering, and, like in our case, kitchen fitting. You can talk openly with them and they can also provide good advice that meets your personal budget and expectations. The job was finished on time, with no delays on their part, and they showed an excellent understanding of our needs. Definitely recommended, especially if you've never hired anyone before and need someone trustworthy for a good job!

Kitchen design and installation from local specialists
What does kitchen design involve?
Good kitchen design is a lot more than choosing the worktops you like and ordering them in the right size. A kitchen specialist who plans and designs kitchens will take a lot of things into account to make sure the kitchen that gets installed is fit for purpose and looks great.

Some of these things are:
- The distance between work areas.
- Worktop materials and whether they can withstand spillages and heat.
- How easy the kitchen is to clean.
- The positioning of different work areas (e.g. is the sink too far from the hob).
- Storage options.
- The positioning of windows and lights – to help create a clean, bright environment to cook and prepare food in safely.
- The location of plumbing and electrical fixtures.
They’ll also consider who the kitchen is being designed for to make sure it meets that person’s tastes and needs. That can mean accommodating disabilities or recognising that a left-handed person might prefer a dishwasher to be to the left of the sink rather than to the right. At the very least, it’ll mean taking that person’s height into account to make sure they don’t need to tip-toe or bend down too far to access cupboards.
A good kitchen designer will draw up plans for the kitchen to help you visualise how the new room will look and make sure the room meets current building regulations. They can also remove an old kitchen before a new one is fitted.
Cost of kitchen design work
The cost of kitchen design work can vary widely depending on how you choose to approach your project. Many independent kitchen designers charge a flat fee for creating a bespoke layout, which usually ranges from £300 to £1,500for the planning and 3D visual design phase alone. On very large or luxury projects, a specialist designer might instead charge a percentage fee, typically around 8% of the overall project cost.
However, if you buy your cabinets and appliances through an all-inclusive high street kitchen showroom or a national brand, the 3D design work is frequently offered as a "free" service, as the company rolls that cost into the final supply and fit price tag of the kitchen itself.
When planning your total renovation budget, it helps to know that the overall cost of a new kitchen—including design, materials, and professional installation—typically falls into three main brackets:
- Budget or cosmetic refresh: £6,000 to £12,000 for off-the-shelf flat-pack units, laminate worktops, and keeping your existing layout.
- Mid-range renovation: £12,000 to £25,000 for durable, semi-bespoke cabinetry, premium surfaces like quartz or granite, and professional tradespeople handling minor structural or plumbing changes.
- High-end or fully bespoke: £25,000 to £60,000+ for handmade, custom joinery, luxury smart appliances, and complex spatial alterations.
As a general rule of thumb, you should expect to allocate roughly 40% of your total budget to cabinetry and worktops, 20% to new appliances, and 20% to professional installation labour, leaving the remaining 20% for flooring, decoration, and a vital emergency contingency buffer.
The qualifications your tradesperson needs
There’s no one recognised qualification for kitchen specialists but most of them have taken a general interior design course with City & Guilds or a similar body before learning the trade on the job. They might start out as interior designers but they could also begin their careers as carpenters or cabinet makers before deciding to specialise in kitchen design.
As well as kitchen design principles, they’ll have a good knowledge of current building regulations and may have connections with other tradespeople like plumbers, electricians, tilers and carpenters who they can call on to help bring a new kitchen space to life. If a gas cooker is on the wish list, only a tradesperson with a valid Gas Safe qualification can fit it. A similar thing goes for electrics. They’ll need to be fitted by a tradesperson with a Part P qualification. They might have both of these qualifications themselves but it’s more likely that they’ll bring in a Gas Safe registered plumber or Part P qualified electrician to carry out the work.
What is a Gas Safe accreditation?
A tradesperson is Gas Safe when they’re on the gas registration body, Gas Safe Register. The register is an official list of gas engineers who are qualified to work safely on gas appliances like boilers and cookers. All qualified engineers carry ID cards with an identification number which you should check on the main Gas Safe Register website, along with their company name, before allowing them to work on gas in your home.
What are the building regulation and Part P requirements for a new kitchen?
While a basic like-for-like kitchen refit doesn't require official approval, any new drainage or electrical installations must comply with UK Building Regulations. Specifically, electrical work should be handled by a Part P certified tradesperson who can self-certify that the job safely protects your home from fire and electric shocks. Furthermore, if you are relocating your kitchen into a brand-new room, you will need formal building regulations approval to ensure the space meets strict ventilation, drainage, structural stability, and fire safety standards.

Do I need planning permission or insurance for kitchen design work?
You generally do not need planning permission to install a new kitchen unless the work is part of a larger house extension or your property is a listed building, in which case you must consult your Local Planning Authority first. Additionally, while holding public liability insurance isn’t a legal requirement for kitchen designers, it is highly recommended that your chosen specialist has it to protect both parties against any accidental property damage or personal injury claims during the project.
What questions should I ask a kitchen specialist before hiring them?
Before making a hire, ask the specialist how long they have been trading, if they can show you a gallery of previous designs, and whether they will be fitting the kitchen themselves or subcontracting the work. You should also clarify how long your kitchen will be unusable, what their guarantee covers, and verify that they hold valid public liability insurance. Finally, always confirm if they use certified tradespeople, specifically asking for a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas appliances and a Part P qualified electrician for the wiring.

Martin Building Ltd Established in 2003 With a large portfolio of previous projects available for you to see yourself, available to view on our website. Regards Carl Martin
Carl and his team did a fantastic job when working on my garage extension and conversion project. It was the first time that I’ve ever done this type of thing but Carl’s communication was spot on from start to finish. He was courteous and communicative throughout and talked me through each day where the project was at and what was next. If I had to appoint a builder again for whatever reason I wouldn’t hesitate in appointing Martin Building Ltd to complete the job. Thanks again Carl!
Hi I'm Richard from South Norwood. First of all I would like to thank you for reading my profile. I'm a sole trader with over forty years experience in home and office improvement and repair. I have worked on a sub-contract basis for a reputable local company for over thirty-five years. My main trades are partitioning, fitting kitchens and bathrooms including plumbing, floor and wall tiling and decorating. I'm also experienced in other trades such as fitting laminate flooring and decking, carpentry and plasterboarding walls and ceilings. I believe it takes no longer to do a good job than it does to do a poor one. I had a High school education and attained o-levels in English, Maths, Geography and Technical drawing. I also am a qualified first aider and I take a refresher course every three years.
Richard did a superb job in putting up shelves, coat rails and curtains for us. He was bang on time, efficient and an absolute pro. He was also an absolutely lovely chap too, a pleasure to talk to and I felt completely comfortable leaving him to work while I worked upstairs. I couldn't recommend Richard highly enough.
