I understand that there is pretty much a minimum price as have to charge for an hour which is a shame as it was a job I knew would take less than an hour. Would be better if the jobs could be priced from half an hour

This person was extremely unprofessional. Having shown interest in my advertised job. I then contacted him via text message to let me know if he is interested to come and view the property at a convenient time, so I can get a quote. No response, so I rang him the next day to explain who I was and the job that needs doing and he uttered something in a different language and put the phone down on me. I didn’t expect this from someone who is on a reliable site such as rated people! very disappointed!

Over 22 years experience in property repair and factory maintenance. I have Public Liability insurance, a recent Enhanced DBS Certificate to be able to work in schools, care homes and other similar workplaces. I always try to agree a price that makes both the customer and myself happy for the work to be done prior. If the customer is not 100% satisfied then no payment. Most recent job requests have been repairs; from rescuing a glass shower cubicle to repairing a garden lighting system. However historically fitting blinds, curtain rails, mounting large TVs, shelving, building flat pack furniture, bespoke decking are my most popular requests. All work guaranteed. Thanks for reviewing my gallery and considering me.

Dan is a great guy who did a fantastic job stripping wallpaper from the ceilings. It turned out to be a lot tougher than expected and ended up taking nearly 12 hours on a Friday! Not once did Dan suggest he would come back another day and he kept going knowing we needed it removed for plastering the next day. Will definitely use again!!

Not only did he do the above jobs but also helped us out in an emergency plumbing job and a safety job ensuring our mobility scooter ramp was secure and could not move while in use. I cannot praise him highly enough. Thank you so much Alistair.

Handymen - what you need to know

A handyman can carry out a range of small "odd jobs" around the home that you can't or don't want to do yourself. They're skilled at a wide range of repairs and maintenance work. If you bought some flat pack furniture and you've been frantically typing 'how to put up IKEA furniture' in an online search engine ever since, a handyman can take the task off your hands. They can also hang objects on walls - like shelves, mirrors, TVs and photos - so you can finally get that photo wall you’ve been dreaming of.

What a handyman can help with

  • Assembling flat pack furniture.
  • Hanging photos/mirrors/TVs on a wall.
  • Mowing a lawn.
  • Hanging shelves on a wall.
  • Small paint jobs that don’t require a painter/decorator.
  • Cleaning a driveway.

Sometimes, there are things that need doing in the house but they seem too small to justify hiring someone to get them done. It could be a small area that needs painting, or you might want your lawn mown and your driveway and garden path hosed down. These are the kinds of jobs a handyman can take care of. They tend to charge by the hour so they can carry out a number of tasks on one visit.

Questions you should ask a handyman

  • How long have they been trading?
  • What work can they do? (It’s a good idea to ask about extra skills, such as electrical.)
  • What experience do they have carrying out similar work to your job? Can they show you pictures?
  • What have their favourite jobs been/what jobs do they like doing?
  • How will they make sure the heavy object won’t fall off the wall?
  • Will they supply the materials for the job (e.g. nails/screws)?
  • Do they have public liability insurance and what does this cover?
  • Will they be carrying out the job themselves or sub-contracting it? If the job’s being carried out by someone else, what experience do they have and are they covered by insurance?
  • Will they give a guarantee/warranty for the work and how long does this last?
  • Is the cost of the job per hour or per finished job?
