Setting the right budget

How much should you expect to pay?

We know it's difficult to estimate how much a project will cost, that's why we've surveyed our tradesmen to give you an idea of how much you should expect to pay for specific jobs. Tradesmen all across the country have contributed to the cost guides, so the costs you see are an approximate national average.

Low High
Locks £30 £50

Replacing or installing secure locks in your existing door is a job that can be done by a security expert and by some carpenters and door-fitters. The important thing is to work with someone who knows all about up-to-date security features and crime prevention and is skilled at this kind of installation. Locks have come a long way from the simple Yale lock and your insurer may specify the type of locks you need to install (usually a five-lever mortice) for your insurance policy to be valid in the event of a break-in.

A good locksmith will be able to install or replace anything from a Chubb-style lock to a system that hooks up to an entry phone with a video screen. The overall cost of the job will depend on the type of locks that you need installing as well as whether the installation requires work to be done on the door, such as chiselling or drilling out new holes for the locks. A standard replacement of a simple Chubb or Yale lock should not be costly and can be done within an hour. A multi-point locking system (which is usually used on UPVC or aluminium doors) can take half a day to set up and install.

Rated People surveyed 83 of our carpenters and joiners across the country to give you an idea of the approximate costs for a range of work on external doors. We also asked about internal doors.
