There are plenty of reasons why you might need your floor screeded. Used to level or prepare, floor screed can cover uneven surfaces or provide a hard-wearing finish. More commonly today, it can also be used when installing underfloor heating too.
Floor screeding may look easy, but it’s a skill that requires expertise to lay. Poor floor screeding won’t last in the long term and can create a headache in the short term if it needs removing, both an expensive and extremely awkward problem to resolve. When it comes to delivering the perfect finish, there are no shortcuts. There’s a tried and tested method you’d expect most professionals to follow closely:
- Screed selection & depth: Choosing the correct floor screed type for your job, where your tradesperson must understand how the floor is going to be used. They’ll then measure not only the surface area, but the required screed depth too.
- Precise blending: Next, they’ll mix the floor screed using an exact blend of materials. Like baking, this is science not art, the quantities and ratios need to be precise. Depending on the size of the floor, a screed pump may be required to ensure materials are mixed correctly using "forced action mixing", which is the most efficient and effective method for large quantities.
- Application & levelling: During the application, the levels across the surface should be recorded to ensure the floor screed is perfectly even.
- Final testing: Finally, your professional should test to ensure the screed has dried and set correctly.

What is the difference between custom MDF and off-the-shelf timber?
While material choices like MDF and timber are vital for interior carpentry projects, your flooring installation requires an understanding of different chemical screed compositions.
- Custom MDF (interior joinery only): Engineered MDF is designed purely for dry interior features like radiator covers or skirting boards. It has no place in subfloor preparation, as it cannot handle moisture.
- Screed mix options (floor bases): For flooring, a proficient specialist will advise you on the correct mixture for your needs. Options include a standard cement and sand screed (the default 1:4 ratio for durable domestic jobs), levelling compounds (expensive but easy-to-apply self-levelling layers for final domestic floors), structural screeds (used on precast floor structures for heavier loads where flexing is necessary), or fast-drying screeds (which can set within 3 days if you are struggling for time).

How long does floor screed take to dry before I can walk on it or lay flooring?
As a general rule of thumb, most screeds are strong enough for light foot traffic within 24 to 48 hours. However, full drying times before you can safely lay final floor coverings take longer. Fast-drying compounds can set within 3 days of laying, but traditional mixtures take longer. Always ask your specialist: "How long will the screed take to fully dry and set?" as they must test the quality to ensure it sets correctly before final flooring is installed.
Do I need to install insulation beneath the floor screed?
Yes, especially on ground floors or when installing underfloor heating. While there are no formal planning permissions required for screeding, it’s important to consider how the floor will be used. A floor ultimately needs to provide structural support for what sits on top of it, as well as resistance to moisture (via damp-proof membranes) and proper thermal insulation.
Can floor screed be used to fix deeply uneven or cracked concrete bases?
Absolutely. Professional screeding services are explicitly designed to level or prepare uneven concrete. For older properties or heavily degraded bases, a specialist will repair structural issues and choose the right application method to ensure the finished surface provides a flat, hard-wearing, and resilient base.
What qualifications and insurance should I check for?

We had them in to install insulation in our upstairs floor, replace the sub floor, replace some lights, install a loft hatch, and board out our loft. On top of this they discovered a problem in our roof that they fixed. We were incredibly impressed by all of the staff that attended on site.
