I think it is fair to say that the more information you able to give about your project the better. A realistic budget is reassuring to trades people but if you are unsure what a realistic budget should be don't be afraid to say so.
Ask for advice. Most genuine trades people will be more than happy to give you the benefit of their experience. Evaluate the advice you are given and the people who give it to you, just as you would with any other transaction. You are probably seeking a well done job at a fair price. This I believe is what most trades people seek to offer. Not all it is true to say, so read their Rated People Reviews and Ratings.
