Just because you have cracks or damage to a small part of your wall does not mean that the whole of that area needs re-plastering or skimming. A skilled plasterer will be able to examine the wall and make a judgment as to how much work needs to be done. In many cases the cracks or damage may be down to a shift in your home or a damp problem, or leak, that has now been dealt with. If the plaster around the area is dry then it will be safe to skim the small area that needs attention. This means that you have a renewed surface for a minimal outlay and you can then redecorate or paper the area. Your plasterer will smooth out the skim to match the area around it, filling any cracks to give you a great finish.
