Hi carol it's called efflorescence it's the salt in some clays the brick company's use best way too avoid it is font use the bricks where this occurs its can be washed off as some people say because its in the clay best way too deal with it is bush it off when its dry and too keep doing that over time it will fade

It sounds like effervescent excuse the spelling but its salt coming out of the brickwork and is nothing to worry about hope this helps

This is ground salts coming out from bricks, sand, its usually comes in first spring for new building / wall, it can be washed with brick& patio cleaner, and power wash, but recommending to do this about April, I think should be more salts till April.. Hope that helps
