Depends on the size of the job. Working for a day rate is ok as long as you have a rough idea how long a job is going to take, this is normally done when there are unknown problems lurking therefore difficult to price accurately. Make sure that set hours are agreed when paying by the day. Wherever possible, especially where jobs specs are clear and straight forward get a fixed price quote prior to commencing.
