A difficult question to answer without more information on the type of boiler/system...alas, you can check the gas is switched on at the meter, check the boiler has an electrical supply (lights on), check if the pressure gauge is in the correct position, check the thermostat is asking the boiler to heat up, check the programmer is set to on. Check the boiler is switched on. All this is just visual checks, don't go opening up the boiler or taking things apart. If all else fails, ask an engineer to pop around, if you avoid the larger companies the cost shouldn't be too significant and you may not have to pay VAT, or post a job on Rated People for direct advice, check they are Gas Safe Registered on the Gas Safe website.
