What is the difference between an EICR and a PAT test?
While both ensure electrical safety, they target completely distinct elements of your property and fall under different legal guidelines:
- Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR): This is an in-depth survey of the fixed electrical infrastructure built directly into the property. It tests the consumer unit, internal wiring, light fittings, and main plug sockets hidden inside walls. It is a legal requirement for UK landlords every 5 years.
- Portable appliance testing (PAT): This focuses purely on electrical items that can be plugged in and moved around. It tests appliances like kettles, laptops, microwaves, and extension leads.
