What is the difference between the main types of fire alarms?
There are four primary types of fire alarms available on the market, and choosing the right technology for the right room is essential for preventing annoying false alarms:
- Ionisation alarms: These are often the cheapest models. They are highly sensitive to tiny, invisible particles of smoke, alerting you before smoke gets thick. However, because they are so sensitive, they are prone to false alarms and shouldn't be placed near kitchens.
- Optical alarms: Slightly more expensive, these excel at detecting slow-burning, smouldering fires (like overheated wiring or upholstery). They are far less likely to be accidentally triggered by charred toast, making them ideal for hallways near kitchens.
- Heat alarms: Rather than detecting smoke, these trigger based on a rapid increase in temperature. They have a smaller coverage area but are the only units suitable for kitchens and garages because cooking steam won't set them off.
- Smart fire alarms: These use advanced optical sensors and connect to your home Wi-Fi. If an alarm sounds, it tells you exactly which room the smoke is in and pushes an instant alert to your smartphone if you are away from home.

I ha been having issues with my shower for MONTHS with it constantly flickering between hot and cold!
