Setting the right budget

How much should you expect to pay?

We know it's difficult to estimate how much a project will cost, that's why we've surveyed our tradesmen to give you an idea of how much you should expect to pay for specific jobs. Tradesmen all across the country have contributed to the cost guides, so the costs you see are an approximate national average.

Paint/stain/varnish finish

Paint/stain/varnish finish £40 £70

Having your current door painted, stained or varnished can make your home look like new and these finishing touches can also make a newly-installed door really stand out. Getting that kerb appeal should not be costly and will be a simple task for any painter and decorator to complete. Whether you have the paint, stain or varnish already or you want help with deciding, a good tradesman will help you get the look that you want without breaking the bank.

The type of stain, varnish or paint finish that you want will in some way determine the cost of the job, as brands, colours and types of finish vary greatly in cost. But the cost of the labour should be fairly standard, as your tradesman will still have to carry out the basics of preparation, sanding down or making minor repairs before adding the finish of your choice.

Rated People surveyed 83 of our carpenters and joiners across the country to give you an idea of the approximate costs for a range of work on external doors. We also asked about internal doors.

Please note these prices are average, do not include materials and are offered as guidance only, to help you budget when posting a job on Rated People. For a free quote tailored to your specific requirements, please contact our local carpenters and joiners.
