Brick skirt and air vents

Posted by Robert Phillpott, on
Hi, At the bottom of our rendered bungalow is a brick skirt which has the necessary air vent bricks. The bricks require attention , should we get them repointed or have them painted with the black stuff that many bungalows around here have done. Can someone explain to me please what is the black stuff that is used for this purpose as obviously we do not want to block up the air vents. Thank you.

Hello Bob, (The black stuff) was used years ago for protecting the damp from the lower bricks. It will not do ant harm painting them it's a matter of choice Regards Michael

Hi Bob. It depends on the age of the bungalow. If it is a newer build with a DPC then it could be painted with the black stuff but it is then another area for maintenace. If it is an old property with no DPC the painting it could start a damp issue in the lower wall inside as the paint will stop the wall from breathing and rising damp could become a problem. Hope this helps. Regards. Colin
