Lime mortar

Posted by robbie Cross, on
I have a georgian house built around 1820 which requires the front wall and some or te side wall repointing. I am told lime mortar was used in the build, should it be used in the repointing?

Robbie, You should most definately use lime mortar. You will need an N.h.l 3.5 lime mortar. The mortar ratio should 5: 2 that's two lime which is the binder and five sand which is the aggregate. Do not put cement anywhere near a lime mortar building as this just traps moisture behind the building fabric and causes various problems! Dave

It can be, cement mortar looks different to the original lime mortar. Get some lime and sand and experiment to get the colour right. It wouldn't hurt to add a little cement to help it cure quicker. First try a 6-1-1 mix. That's six sand one lime one cement. Mix a small quantity, say 3 cups of sand, half a cup of lime and half a cup of cement. Mix it slowly adding a little water at a time till it's smooth and is the consistency of thick clotted Cornish cream. Wett the surface well and try it.do a small patch and let it dry( 24 hrs) then compare the colour and adjust the lime content till you have it right. Good luck JC
