Repointing a house built circa 1900

Posted by Jenny Hopkins, on
Our house needs repointing in various areas and we were wondering whether it's better to get the whole building done and how much this might cost. Some of the bricks also look damaged (spalled?) We don't know if it needs to be done with lime mortar. How would we find out? We live in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Thanks

Hi Jenny There are two parts to your question. 1. Your house was built, circa 1900, then the binder will most certainly be lime mortar. 2. If the greater percentage of the bricks look as if these do not need repointing i.e. the mortar is flush with the edge of the bricks, just patch point to match, the new lime mortar will soon weather to match the existing. Coincidently, I am coming to the Peak District, from Norwich next weekend for a couple of days walking and would be happy to drop in and advise you accordingly. Regards David
