Can solid wall conservatory be used for kitchen extension?

Posted by Tony Morrisen, on
I would like to extend my kitchen and knock the wall out to create large open planned kitchen. Cheapest option is a solid wall conservatory (Brick 2 sides / glass pitched roof.) The size would be roughly (w)5m x (d)3m. My worry is that regulations would prevent a conservatory being used in this way - gas appliances etc. Also would the solid glass roof be suitable or just steam up from general cooking? / or let out too much heat to be effective as a permanent room? Thanks

Hi Tony A conservatory can't easily be converted to being part of the house, they are rarely (like hens teeth rare) built to comply with building regulations and its invariably cheaper to knock them down and build an extension Martin

Hi Tony A conservatory has to have at least 50% glass to be classed as that and not come under the building regulation. So what you would want would be an extension. If you want a lot of light maybe put in velum windows in the roof and if possible by fold doors Lee
