Bathroom completed but now structural issues

Posted by Kirsty Pineger, on
Hi, we had a bathroom fitted and a small stud wall removed in process. Neighbour upstairs now says after a year that his floor is dipping and it looks like no reinforcements were put in. How do we go about rectifying this and do our builders have a duty to fix it/compensate us if we have to have building work done through their mistake?

Hi kirsty If it was a standard stud wall this wouldn't be providing any structural support to the ceiling above, however as buildings settle over years then floor joists can sit down onto a stud wall and once removed some movement can occur I personally would never add a beam or lintel when taking out a stud wall and it certainly isn't a building regulations requirement. Best thing to do as a start is speak to your builders and see what they say.
