Repointing

How do you know when repointing a wall on an Edwardian house is necessary and needs to be done sooner rather than later

Clair hi. A good way to check your pointing is to rub between the bricks with your finger, if the morter crumbles and you can put the hole finger nail between the bricks (depth) then its a good chance re-pointing is needed. Re-pointing is a slow process and may cost also bare in mind that who ever you get to do it should use the right morter mix. Edwardian bricks were laid with a semi sharp sand (little stones) which you should be able to see quite clearly. Modern bricks are laid with soft sand, its all about the finish and these two sands give different finishes. hope that helps.
