Hi, There is only one way if you do not have the original plan and building regulation paperwork for when the garage was built, and that is to do a test dig to actually see how the footings are constructed. With regard to if planning permission is reqd, you can complete an online pre planning advice form at your local authority planning portal website. Hope that helps? Steve
