Builders taking money and not working.

Posted by A Nother, on
Hi We have engaged a building firm to do some work for us, but having taken a large deposit (covering all materials) and charged for labour each week, they are on site less and less with a variety of reasons, including not being able to get blocks and there building team all being ill. These reasons are only given after we return from work having found nothing has been done. Searching around we have now found another customer that engaged them nearly a year ago for a two week job that is not complete. advice please....

Hi A this type of question gets asked over and over again and it still amazes me that people are talked into handing over large sums of money to builders they barely know! There is no need to order all materials for a large project at once so why do they need all the money up front and they are getting paid weekly for labour too, great if you can get it! You should have agreed stage payments with them so as each stage of the build is completed they receive payment, much safer for you and any reputable builder would be happy with this. It sounds like they do the disappearing act regularly so I doubt if it will end well for you. If you have their trading address send them a letter recorded delivery outlining your concerns and asking for a timescale for works to be completed, if no satisfactory answer is received legal action may be necessary. You could also contact trading standards at your local council. Ed
