I was foreman on an old arts and crafts movement place a couple of years ago and the architect's specification to prevent this type of noise (strike noise) was... Resilient bars (resilient is a brand) Plank (a very dense mineral board) Then two layers of normal plaster board The important thing to note with the resilient bars is that they must be fixed to the ceiling joist then the plank is screwed to the bars. The screws that make this union must not touch the ceiling joist. The idea is there the "mechanical" link between the floor above and the plaster of your ceiling is broken by the resilient bars. Stuffing mineral wool into the void may also help. I also recall that we took care to seal the junction of the plank ad the wall with bonding plaster (which you would normally bother to do if there was coving). On another job we sound proofed the floor above which was VERY effective but clearly this is not an option for you but it is the better method Jon
