To achieve the correct thickness of insulation this makes sense It depends what you are planning to use your loft for Boarding will add considerably to the insulating effect of your loft so I would say it is not essential to increase the joist height and have a well insulated loft. My loft is my office, I kept the original joist height and insulated the eves with kingspan (this is expensive) so my "roof structure" is well insulated. I can't sell my house and advertise this as a room though because the joists are not strong enough, its just a fancy loft. Not having the correct thickness of insulation may effect the energy rating of your house - but I think all the "homebuyers reports" stuff is dead now anyway??? Jon Wild - Exploit Space
