How to know whether wooden front door can be rehanged

Posted by Julian Johnson, on
I have a wooden front door that has large gaps at various points, a chubb lock that no longer aligns, and scrapes the door frame at other points. How can I tell if it is rehangable or needs a replacement?

and it will be hard to make it strong and viable again from a security point of view If its is a panel door and all the frame and panels have slumped horizontal parts of the door are no longer horizontal its probably finished this might be why the lock no longer aligns

Regarding ironmongery positions Locks, hinges, etc It is possible to repair old lock and hinge positions and they may be re-usable as they are. But to do this properly by piecing in bits of timber is a time consuming and craftsmanly job. Smaller defects cam be filled. There will be a point where it is more cost effective in the long term to just put a new door in. I have re-hung and reconditioned front doors in the past and its taken four days and anybody good is going to be charging you over on sixty per day. If is a very stylish door unique to the period and property it could be fully recondition in almost any state OR it could be copied but you are probably talking on thousand plus for either of these routes
