Door not closing evenly

Posted by Aimee Smith, on
My door is not closing evenly, there is a quarter inch gap at the bottom below the latch. Can I adjust the hinges to tighten the gap?

Dear Aimee To get that satisfying "thunk" when a door closes -- rather than rattles, squeaks, or scrapes -- there must be an even gap between the door and the jamb all around; the hinges should be flush with the jamb and move freely; and the stop and the strike plate should be correctly aligned, so the door's latch easily clicks into the hole in the strike plate when the door closes. I hope this can help Best regards Rafal

Hi Aimee it sounds like you have an uneven margin (gap) around the edge of the door that is why you have a bigger gap below the latch than you do above it. A simply remedy would be to pack the bottom hinge to push the door across, this can be done using 5mm wide strips of cardboard ( cereal box or similar) cut to the length of the hinge.Loosen the screws (but don't remove this will stop the card pushing back too far) on the bottom hinge and slide the cardboard strips in from the hinge side of the door, tighten the screws and check the gap, repeat until suitable gap is achieved. Hope this helps if not post your job on Rated People. Thanks. Ed.
