Secret door?

Posted by Kendra Kirkham, on
Is it possible to replace a door with a bookshelf (secret door) without doing any major structural work? The main bedroom in question is 4.08m x 2.04m and the door to the storage room (secret den) is approx. 2m x 3m

Hi Kendra, From your measurements it sounds as if you are talking about double doors? You should not need any structural work as such but I would suggest making sure the frame is a strong one and fitting a couple of extra hinges on each side, using robust screws and hinges. Obviously it depends on how heavy the books will be, and the idea below of a facade of book spines would certainly lessen the weight substantially. I hope this helps.

It is possible to replace a door with a bookcase. Given the size of the door being 2m x 3m, I would suggest splitting the door into 2 and fitting a deeper linning if possible so you can fit the bookcase shelves etc to the face of the doors. If you wanted to have just the 1 door and had room to the side, you could incorporate a sliding mechanism which would work similar to a side door on a van. It is worth bearing in mind the weight of the door/bookcase especially when filled with books, you could fit a fasade of book spines. The cheapest way and proberbly the least disruptive would be to just paint a picture on the doors to resemble a bookcase. Hope this information is of use to you.

Hello Kendra, Yes this should be a straight forward job as long as you aren't planning on increasing the width of the existing doorway. If you are you need to check if the wall is structural or not. Cheers Craig

From your description there does not seem to be any requirement for structural work as both your rooms are insitu, unless of course you are taking the complete wall down with the door, then it becomes slightly more complex and completely dependent upon if the wall is a supporting wall or not, sounds like you are replacing a door for simply a different sort of access, we would need to see photos to give a more complete answer, hope this helps
