How do I create a simple wooden fire surround.

I have a gas fire and a marble hearth and I want to add the feature of a simple wooden fire surround with mantelpiece. All the ones I see on-line are either too big or too expensive and look difficult to fit. I have some DIY experience but am not sure what type of fittings to use to assemble a surround.
